Gija Community’s Permanent Exhibition – Origins Gallery

November 2020

In November 2020, the Gija Community’s permanent exhibition at the new WA Museum, Boola Bardip was opened.

The Origins Gallery features some of Western Australia’s unique and iconic landscapes through Aboriginal peoples’ ancient and enduring connection to Country. The gallery features four major displays and eight smaller displays from 12 language groups in Western Australia.

As part of the exhibition, an interactive display panel was created by the Gija Community in partnership with SharingStories Foundation. Led by Senior Gija Cultural Custodian, Shirley Drill, the bilingual display panel shares original artwork, animations, photographs and video from Gija Country. Much of the content was created by students at Purnululu School (Aboriginal Independent Community School) in Frog Hollow and Cultural Custodians from the Warmun Art Centre. The exhibition also encompasses an artistic sculptural impression of the Bungle Bungle Ranges and an artwork by Senior Custodian, Phyllis Thomas.
