This project was created by SharingStories Foundation in collaboration with the Bangerang, Gunaikurnai, Gunditjmara, Jaara, Wamba Wamba and Wurundjeri communities and the Koorie Heritage Trust. Individual credits can be found on each community page. SharingStories Foundation is a First Nations-led organisation that works with First Nations communities across this land to protect, maintain and grow languages, stories and cultural heritage
About this Koorie Culture Map
Victoria is home to many distinct First Nations communities, cultures and languages. In Victoria, the term Koorie is often used to refer to Aboriginal peoples from this region.  This interactive map was created by SharingStories Foundation in collaboration with six Koorie  communities, together with the  Koorie Heritage Trust. Start by watching the Welcome film from each community, then journey across the map to explore cultural landmarks and animated stories, including some shared in the community’s Language. Along the way, you may discover places that are not far from where you are right now.   Many of the films and stories were illustrated, animated, performed and sound-designed by young people working alongside Elders, storytellers and community members. To explore more you can also visit the Multi-Touch Book catalogue.

SharingStories Foundation acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands, skies and waters. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to the communities who continue to care for and share culture and language.  This interactive map is an invitation to learn through story, place and connection. Rather than representing Country through colonial lines and borders, the map brings together living stories, languages, memories and cultural knowledge connected to place across Victoria. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this website contains images, voices and names of people who have passed over to the Dreaming.
